Fear of beauty

AN EXHIBITION OF FIVE AFGHAN WOMEN PHOTOGRAPHERS DEDICATED TO WOMEN

Portraits of women of different generations in their daily lives: someone plays, someone takes pictures, someone else washes dishes or is portrayed while learning to ride a bike, together with the large family or as part of a couple. There are many different faces and scenes of life portrayed in the photographic exhibition titled “Fear of Beauty”, conceived by Dr. Carla Pessina and hosted from 8 to 20 March 2022 at CASA EMERGENCY, in Via Santa Croce 19, Milan.

The exhibition, realized in collaboration with the Italian Women Photographers Association, presents the works of five Afghan photographers, Mariam Alimi, Roya Heydari, Fatimah Hossaini, Zahara Khodadadi and Najiba Noori. Artists who left their country in order to continue to pursue their passion and art.

The impact of the war on the status of women in Afghanistan has been very strong: destroyed families, displacement, psychological damage, economic impoverishment and violence are just some of the consequences directly experienced by women in these forty years of continuous conflict in the country. And today, with the return of the Taliban to power, the situation for women is even more uncertain. The works of Mariam Alimi, Roya Heydari, Fatimah Hossaini, Zahara Khodadadi and Najiba Noori that will be exhibited at CASA EMERGENCY  show the everyday life of mothers, wives and young independent women in search of their own space in a country where this is often limited by boundaries, rules and prohibitions. The exhibition is a journey through Fatimah Hossaini’s splendid female close-ups, a real challenge to a male-dominated world; the complexity of Afghan family groups portrayed by Zahra Khodadadi; the reportages by Mariam Alimi, Roya Heydari and Najiba Noori that investigate women’s conditions both in the private and public, indoor and outdoor.
